What is the Sony WH-1000XM6?
The Sony WH-1000XM6 is Sony's current flagship pair of wireless noise-cancelling headphones. They follow the WH-1000XM5. A new HD Noise Canceling Processor QN3, which Sony says is 7x faster than the QN1 in the XM5, manages 12 microphones in real time for noise cancelling and calls. They're over-ear, weigh about 254 g, and the earcups fold for travel.
What stands out
- Noise cancelling that adapts. The Adaptive NC Optimizer adjusts to outside noise, air pressure and how you wear them, even with a hat or glasses.
- Long battery life. Up to 30 hours with noise cancelling on, and up to 40 hours with it off.
- Quick charging. Sony says 3 minutes on a USB PD adapter gives about 3 hours of playback.
- Multipoint. Stay connected to your laptop and phone at the same time.
- Wide codec support. SBC, AAC, LDAC for higher-quality audio, and LC3 for LE Audio.
Who is it for?
The WH-1000XM6 is for people who need quiet to focus: remote workers in busy homes, people in open-plan offices, commuters and frequent flyers. Multipoint and the 12-mic system make them a good fit if you take a lot of calls between your laptop and phone.
Skip them if you're on a budget or only need headphones for occasional listening. If you're a creator monitoring your own recordings, wired studio headphones are a better tool, since Bluetooth can add delay.
Our take
On paper, the XM6 is a focused upgrade over the XM5: a faster noise-cancelling chip, more microphones and folding earcups. The battery and quick charging specs suit long workdays and long flights. The trade-offs are the premium price and the lack of a wall charger in the box. If blocking out noise all day is your main goal, these are a strong pick.
