Plain-English summary of what we collect and why.

Who we are
usethisforthat.com is operated by Alpha Catalyst Ventures LLC, a Wyoming limited liability company registered to do business in California, doing business as KEYZ Media ("UseThisForThat", "we", "us"). It's a directory of software tools, gear and deals. We are the controller of the personal data described here. Contact: privacy@usethisforthat.com.
What we collect
Information you give us
- Account details — your email address and, if you sign in with Google, your name and profile photo from your Google account.
- Newsletter sign-ups — your email address and the page you signed up from.
- Vendor submissions — the company and contact details you enter in the vendor portal.
- Emails you send us — your address and whatever you include in the message.
- Payments — Premium memberships are processed by Stripe. We never see or store your full card number; we keep your Stripe customer ID, plan, renewal date and membership status.
Information collected automatically
- Outbound click data — when you click a deal, "Visit website" or "Check price" link, we record the product and deal, the page you came from, referrer, UTM parameters, device type, approximate country, and a one-way hash of your IP address (we do not store raw IP addresses). This lets us attribute affiliate commissions and detect fraud.
- Code reveals — when you reveal a promo code we record which deal and, if you're signed in, your account.
- Finder searches — the text you type into the "use this for that" finder. We don't save it to your account; it's used to find matches and may appear in server logs.
- Server logs — our hosting provider keeps standard request logs (including IP address) for security and debugging.
Cookies
We only use cookies and similar storage that are essential to run the site:
- Supabase auth cookies (
sb-…) — keep you signed in. - A local-storage entry (
utft_cookie_consent) — remembers that you've seen our cookie notice.
We don't use analytics or advertising cookies on usethisforthat.com. If we add them later, we'll update this policy and ask for your consent where the law requires it.
When you click through to a vendor or retailer — including Amazon — that site sets its own cookies to track the referral and your purchase. Those cookies are governed by that company's privacy policy, not this one.
How we use data
- To provide the Service: accounts, members-only deals, and Premium billing.
- To send emails about your account and membership, such as renewal reminders and notices of price or policy changes.
- To send the newsletter you asked for (every issue has a one-click unsubscribe link).
- To measure clicks and conversions so we get paid by partners, and to improve the site.
- To answer your emails.
- To prevent abuse (rate limiting, spam submissions, affiliate fraud) and comply with the law.
Who we share it with
Service providers that process data on our behalf:
- Supabase — database and sign-in.
- Vercel — hosting.
- Stripe — payments and billing.
- Google — "Sign in with Google", and Google Workspace for our email.
- beehiiv — newsletter delivery.
- Resend — account and billing emails, such as renewal reminders.
- OpenAI or Anthropic (if enabled) — the finder sends only your search text, never your email or account.
Affiliate partners and retailers — when you click through, the vendor, affiliate network or retailer (such as Amazon) receives the click, including a tracking tag or anonymous click ID. We never send them your email address.
Legal and business reasons — if required by law, to protect our rights or users' safety, or as part of a merger, acquisition or sale of assets (in which case this policy continues to apply to your data).
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for cross-context behavioural advertising.
Retention
Click logs are kept for up to 24 months. Account and billing records are kept while your account is open and afterwards as long as needed for tax and accounting law. Newsletter data is kept until you unsubscribe. Emails you send us are kept as long as needed to handle your request.
Security
We use encryption in transit, access controls and reputable providers to protect your data. No system is perfectly secure, so we can't guarantee absolute security.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, delete or export your data, and to object to or restrict how we use it. Email privacy@usethisforthat.com from the address on your account and we'll respond within 30 days (or 45 days where state law allows). We may need to verify your identity first. You can use an authorised agent, and we won't treat you differently for exercising your rights.
California residents. In the last 12 months we collected the categories described in "What we collect": identifiers (such as email and hashed IP), commercial information (membership and purchase history), internet activity (clicks and searches) and approximate location (country). We use them for the purposes above and disclose them only to the recipients listed above. We don't sell or share personal information, and we don't use sensitive personal information to infer anything about you.
Visitors from the EU and UK
If you're in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, we rely on these legal bases:
- Contract — to provide your account and Premium membership.
- Legitimate interests — to measure affiliate clicks, prevent fraud and improve the Service.
- Consent — for the newsletter. You can withdraw consent at any time by unsubscribing.
- Legal obligation — to keep billing records.
We're based in the United States, and our providers process data in the US and other countries. Where data leaves the EEA or UK, we rely on our providers' safeguards, such as the EU Standard Contractual Clauses or the EU–US Data Privacy Framework. You also have the right to complain to your local data protection authority (in the UK, the ICO).
Children
The Service is for adults 18 and older. It isn't directed to children, and we don't knowingly collect data from anyone under 18. If you think a child has given us data, email privacy@usethisforthat.com and we'll delete it.
Changes
We'll post any changes here and update the date above. We'll email account holders about material changes before they take effect.
